Birth of babies through in vitro fertilization procedures has Tenewed interest by clinicians as well as laymen in the phenomenon of fertilizatien. In most medical text books, fertilization is treated very lightly giving students the impressien that fertilization is a simple mechanical penetration of a spermatozoon into an egg. This is far frorn the truth. Fertilization comprises ・a series of complicated, yet very well coordinated interactions between the two gametes, Each gamete must prepare itself for fertilization and ,interact properly to complete fertilization normally. In this article, the author does not attempt to discuss every detail of the ferti]ization processes. Rather, an outline of fertilization wi11 be described to inform readers of some facts uncovered in relatively recent years. Figure 1 shows the norma] morphology of fertilization in the golden hamster as an example of fertilization n mammals.
